Frequently Asked Questions

Q?

What kinds of clients do you work with?

A.

I work with clients of all ages.
Children and adolescents.  For children as young as four, I incorporate their natural language of play in our sessions.  In my work with older children, I like to use a combination of traditional talk therapy with a variety of expressive techniques that allow my young clients to communicate their story.
Adults.  I find that while some prefer the traditional talk therapy during our sessions, others are just as eager to play and use expressive techniques to gain insight into their struggles.

Q?

How long do sessions last and how often will I need to come to therapy?

A.

A therapeutic hour lasts 45-60 minutes.   Younger clients will have the shorter sessions. I usually see clients once a week until their therapeutic goals are met.  We may meet more or less often based on personal need.

Q?

What happens in the first session?

A.

When we meet for the first time, we’ll review your history as well as confidentiality and the nature of the counselor-client relationship.  I’d like us to share our expectations for therapy and talk about the level of commitment required for personal change.  This is a great time for you to ask any unanswered questions you may have.  If you are bringing your child to therapy, we’ll usually meet ahead of time without the child present and then schedule the second session with the child so I can begin building rapport as quickly as possible.

Q?

What are the pros and cons of going to therapy?

A.

One of the biggest benefits to going to therapy is your personal growth.  The dynamics of the counselor-client relationship combined with the therapeutic process offer you the opportunity to increase your self-awareness, and gain a greater understanding of your life’s experiences and how they have helped to shape you as a human being. Other perks are enhanced communication skills, improved self -esteem and a greater set of healthy coping skills to deal with life’s stressors.  Often the most difficult part of therapy can be revisiting old wounds or strained relationships in an effort to heal them.  At times, clients may experience more painful emotions in the beginning as they address the issues that have put their life on hold.   Despite the mix of emotions, therapy is known to be very healing when clients are committed to change.
Note:  Therapy can also be utilized to create behavior changes.  This does not always require a trek to the past, especially for children.

Q?

Do you take insurance?

A.

At this time, I am an "in network" provider with several Aetna and BCBS of Texas plans.  I am able to file "out of network" for most insurances.  I am always able to accept private pay by credit card or cash payments which means I will not verify benefits or file claims with your insurance company.  It is a courtesy service that I provide when verifying benefits and filing claims.  You are encouraged to always know and understand your insurance plan and benefits as they sometimes communicate incorrect information to providers and make adjustments to fees without notice.  Please speak to me directly if you have any questions regarding insurance and private pay for sessions.
