Heather Mathews, M.Ed, MSW student
I am a lifelong learner and see the intrinsic value in having a growth mindset. One of my favorite quotes is from John Mayer, “I know a girl who puts the color inside of my world.” Over the years, I have often thought of therapy as putting the color back into someone’s world when all they can see through their experiences is black and white. I have always had a strong desire to uplift and help others. This passion led me to pursue a career in social work.
Before embarking on my journey as a therapist and social work student, I had the privilege of working as an educator. Although my career path has shifted, the skills and insights I gained as an educator continue to shape my approach to supporting and empowering others. This background also supplied me with a strong foundation in designing effective learning experiences as I combine my passion for education with my desire to grant therapeutic support to my clients.
I have also had the opportunity to work with foster families and provide crisis counseling. This framework allowed me to witness the resilience and strength of individuals and families facing challenging circumstances. I am committed to helping them navigate through difficult times and aiding in finding hope and healing.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a therapist is the ability to explore various therapy options. Everyone has a unique journey, and I believe in tailoring treatment approaches to meet specific needs. Some of my favorite therapies are Bowen family systems, narrative therapy, trauma informed therapy as well as using a strength-based approach. I often incorporate the use of imagery and writing expression as well. My goal is to advocate and empower my clients with tools and offer a path to meaningful change as we build a rewarding therapeutic relationship together.
